8.20.12 – Days need sober living
After reminding the suffering Christians about their ‘ugly past’ [1Peter 4:3], the apostle Peter challenges them to be clear-minded and self – controlled so that they can pray and live responsibly. The salvation they have received is great, yet they still need to put on a soldier mentality [1Peter 1:13-14] to march on victoriously to the heavenly home where life will be enjoyed to the full. The apostle Paul also warns the Ephesians against the addictive nature of wine, for by it many are morally corrupted [Ephesians 5:18]. Drunkenness and wisdom do not walk together [Eph. 5:15-17].
Our problem today may not be drunkenness (although it might be for some of us) or the suffering that Peter’s audience was experiencing. But it may be being self-centred, blinded and callous that we fail to love the Lord our God whole heartedly and love our neighbour as ourselves. There are so many distractions in our day – pleasure, riches, popularity and of course, sin. We must guard our hearts [Proverbs 4:23] for it is the wellspring of our life. We must be wise to remain stable in our faith walk so that we will be able to live responsibly.
Let the Lord help us to get rid of those things which make us stagger in our faith walk. Let Him help us to be circumspect. Amen
