Sethi: A Mother’s Day Story About Living Under God’s Grace

Thirteen-year-old Nothando is full of life and hope: “When I grow up, I aspire to be a scientist because it’s something that I’ve always wanted and I’m good at science… I’ve always wanted to know about the things that have been happening around us… how the earth began and what will happen next.”

Nothando and her family struggle to make ends meet, but her mother – Sethi – leads the family with her firm belief that they face each day through God’s love and grace.

Sethi became the sole caregiver for Nothando and her four older siblings when Nothando’s father caught a fever and died in Nigeria in 2014. Her husband’s unexpected death left Sethi with limited means of providing for their children. Initially, she ran a rural shop, but with Zimbabwe’s hard economic challenges, the business was forced to close. Next, she did some cross-border trading, but that stopped after the government placed a ban on imported goods, and she has not been able to find steady employment since.

Pastor Kolobe at Harrisvale Baptist Church became aware of the family’s challenges. He was especially concerned with the youngest daughter, Nothando, who stopped attending school because Sethi could not afford the fees. Harrisvale Baptist Church, through its partnership with Forgotten Voices, stepped in to pay for Nothando’s schooling, demonstrating a commitment to her curiosity and a belief in her capability to learn.

“Indeed, God is working wonders,” remarked Sethi, still amazed that the church stepped in to help with Nothando’s school fees. A tired mother, she nonetheless perseveres to support her children in whatever ways she can. In the face of challenges, she prays that her children will grow to be successful, love one another, and stand together to help each other as one unit.

Mothers around the world echo Sethi’s prayers for their children. Like Sethi, we are amazed by the faithful provision of our Almighty God, who was, and is and is to come (Revelation 4:8). And like young Nothando, we may wonder “about the things that have been happening around us” and “what will happen next,” but we can rest peacefully in His assurance:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart…” (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
